N.O.V.A. is a family-oriented Tae Kwon Do school in Gaylord, Michigan. Founded in March, 2006, we offer classes for ages two and up with or without previous martial arts experience.  We have a dedicated full-time dojo which enables us to offer specialized classes throughout the week!

About Taekwondo

Tae: To Strike with the Foot, Kwon: To Strike with the Hand, Do: The Way

Taekwondo is a Korean form of martial arts, very much like karate, that emphasizes kicking and striking techniques.  Taekwondo can help you or your child build confidence, get physically fit while having fun, and develop discipline for your mind and body.

We focus on 3 different aspects of Martial Arts.

  1. Art: We study a very traditional style of taekwondo that has very old roots. We aim to preserve the Art and style of Chung Do Kwan Taekwondo.

  2. Sport: There is an obvious sport side to taekwondo.  There are many tournament opportunities, and taekwondo is an Olympic sport.

  3. Self Defense: This probably one of the most important aspects of Martial Arts. There are bullies out there who pick on others and there probably always will be. Many people take Martial Arts to be better prepared if they were attacked.

N.O.V.A Stands For...
  • New Ideas: Although the name taekwondo has only been used since the 1950's it is a Martial Arts that has been practiced in Korea for more than 2000 years.  We use teaching techniques today that enable children as young as toddlers to not only benefit from the disciples of this art but also enjoy coming back to class on a weekly basis. By using multi-sensory techniques in our teaching it helps enable all styles of learners to participate.

  • Old Traditions: Just because a modern class may look different today the principles and traditions remain the same. You will find many traditional elements in our dojo and classes including bowing as a sign of respect, mastering the art of traditional weapons and punches, kicks and stances you may have learned from a Master in years past.

  • Valuable Principles:

    • Courtesy,

    • Integrity,

    • Perseverance,

    • Indomitable spirit,

    • Self-control.

  • Achievable Goals: As a student at NOVA you will quickly learn that the only person you are competing against is the person you were yesterday. We have had many students throughout the years with varying degrees of ability, or even what some may call a disability. We will help you set your personal goals and are dedicated to helping you achieve them! As our founder was fond of saying "A Black Belt is just a White Belt who never quit."
